To celebrate Volkswagen’s Routan making vacation easier, we would like to offer you the chance to win an awesome VW Routan Summer Road Trip survival pack courtesy of VW.
I love road trips. Ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, I remember always getting excited when my parents said we were going to travel. Because we didn't have a lot of money, many of our trips were road trips. I remember the excitement the night before packing all our stuff. My sister and I always were allowed to take one personal bag or tote with stuff to entertain ourselves on the road. I remember having a little pink bag that I would keep crayons and coloring books. I also made sure to have a few books. My sister always carried the games. Most of the time we would just look out the window and think about all the cool places we were going to visit.
And now that I have seen how cool the VW Routan is, I wish we had one of these when we had traveled to Costa Rica!! Is is so beautiful and comfortable. And if you share a road trip story with me, you will be eligible to win this wonderful prize pack:
* Two No-spill cups for babies/toddlers

My sister and I were coming back north from Tampa and instead of taking the interstate, we took the scenic coastal road. At a stop light, I looked up and saw a sign that said "Follow That Dream Parkway". We both squealed with delight! We'd been playing Elvis music the whole trip down and back, and here we were right at the very beach where Elvis filmed "Follow That Dream". We had no idea! It was such a pleasant surprise!

ReplyDeleteWe bought a Routan a few days ago. The picture you have up is even the same color as ours! It's already been to garage sales and it really likes them.
ReplyDeleteOne time I made a road trip with four little kids from Texas to Ohio - while we all had food poisoning from undercooked chicken. Guess how fun it is to share a little plastic trash bin for throwing up while riding in the car? Go ahead - guess!

On the first trip we took with our then three girls to myrtle beach in our jeep and the a/c broke and we couldn't get it fixed in time and had to drive down there in temps reaching 100 degrees and we were staying about 20-30 miles from the beach as it was due to the last minute reservations and were miserable due to the driving distance and just being hot and then the next year we decided to rent a vehicle and we realized once we were packed in it and on the road it didn't have a cd player...who makes cars these days without a effing cd player and had to listen to the same song playing on the radio for over 4 hours on the way to myrtle beach to make better memories...

My most memorable trip is one we took to Las Vegas a few years back. On the way, we saw thunderstorms and lighting in a distance. The visual was so beautiful and perfect, it left a huge impression on me, and I never forgot the memory or the trip.

The best road trip was driving through the middle of the desert in Mexico on a 12 hour road trip. We were in a small Mexican car with no a/c and no radio. I was stuck in the backseat the whole trip. We didn’t speak any Spanish which made it very interesting to cross the borders between the Mexican states. The border guards with their machine guns added to the whole adventure. It was the adventure of a lifetime.

ReplyDeleteMy most memorable road trip was when my son was 3 1/2 years old. We were on our way to visit friends and family in MA. From MD, that is about an 8 hour drive. I figured it best to get an early start so we left my house at about 4:00 a.m. I figured my son could sleep most of the way. My son woke up around 11:00 thirsty. So I gave him something to drink. Well not more than 5 minutes later, he starting throwing up. I was like oh my goodness. Thank goodness my mom was with me, that the rest stop was 10 minutes down the road, and that I had a bucket in the car. lol. We pulled over to the rest stop, cleaned up my son. I took his temp. and he had a fever of 102 degrees. Mind you he was not warm at all when I put him in the car to leave and he had no complaints the day before. Anyhow, he spent about 2-3 days sick with a fever. But all and all we ended up having a wonderful week visiting friends in MA and camping in NH. I highly suggest if you have children, that you always keep a small trash can or bucket in the car for these moments. Trust me, I have used the one I have on many occasions because you just never know. My son is now 8 years old and I still have one my vehicle. lol

ReplyDeleteThe summer going into 5th grade my parents and i drove from Long island to Arizona. We made tons of stops along the way at tourist attractions. We were gone like 3 weeks i think. We didnt have any hotel reservations because we kinda went wherever we felt like it and my parents would just take turns driving until they were too tired. One night it was really late and my parents were driving around looking for a hotel ( this was the days long before cell phones and gps) They finally found one and as they pulled in all these freaking military hummers pulled in and out jumped a bunch of guys in camo. My parents were definitly like WTF. Aparantly they had been out training and were gonna sleep a few hours at that hotel. needless to say they got the last rooms. We finally found another hotel and checked in. Everyone was hungry so across the street was a diner so my dad crossed the street and the street lights went out. I forget why but me and my mom didnt cross the same time as him. We thought it was a fluke and he crossed back and they came back on. we crossed as a family and they all went off again. They came back on when we got inside the diner. When we left we sent my dad across the street again first and sure enough all the street lights went off again. They came on again when me and my mom crossed. Same thing happened the next am when we went for breakfast! It happened in a few other small towns too. We kept telling my dad he had some weird sort of energy!

Turned out he was the stores foundeer and the worlds's oldest CEO, well over 100 years old and still working. It ended up being one of the best parts of our trip...

My most memorable road trip was when I was young. We went to Mesa Verde Colorado, Zion National Park, The Grand Canyon and visited my good friend in Arizona. I especially loved Mesa Verde and learning about the Anasazi Indians. Not a crazy adventure, but a wonderful trip that I look back on with fondness 20 some odd years later.

My most memorable road trip was taking a rented 4 wheel drive subaru down the steep and winding road to Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. During the night as we were camping on the beach, a rain storm moved in. The road out of the Valley was flooded. We tried to make it out and got the subaru stuck in water. We were soaking wet too. Finally a tour jeep pulled us out. We made it out of the valley and about 1 mile outside of the town of Kona, the subaru just died on us. That was a crazy roadtrip, but Waipio Valley is beautiful so definitely worth the experience.

OK, well this one is a little scary only because of lack of sleep. My wife and I were supposed to go on a cruise in Florida after we were first married. We had flight tickets to get down there but on the day of our flight there was huge ice storm and and so we had no choice but to drive so we drove over 1200 miles from Oklahoma to Fort Lauderdale in about 24 hours straight. NONSTOP. It was crazy and dangerous and we certainly were not rested enought to drive and when we got to Florida everybody looked at us like we were crazy because we were wearing layers of clothes and we got to our motel and slept for about 12 hours. But once we got on the cruise we had a blast!

A couple of years ago my husband and I decided to attend a New Year’s concert in Detroit with a bunch of our friends from around the county and we decided to drive. So we left a few days early and we drove and on the way we stopped in Aurora, IL which is the setting of the movie ‘Wayne’s World’ and we thought it would be funny to take a picture there. Then we went to Chicago (we had never been) and stayed for 2 days. It was fun! We went to the Second City, museums and sites and then we drove to Detroit and joined our friends for the concert and had a blast!! But then the next day we got up and drove straight home. Good road trip!

I went on a trip from Texas to North Carolina with my inlaws and my son, who was 3 years old at the time. I was driving and ran over a tool that fell off of a truck ahead of us. My most memorable roadtrip was when our car broke down on our way home from AZ to IA. We had planned on being home in 2 days and it took 7. It was crazy but we all survived.

We recently went on a trip to Disneyland! We unfortunately went at the hottest time of the year! Everytime we were at a theme park like magic kingdom or animal kingdom we were overcome with heat and misery. We sought out lines that were shaded or inside, and most of our trip turned into survival of the hottest, but we enjoyed all spending time together!

When I was 14 my family took our anual trip from TX to PA to visit family and on the way home we took a whole week to tour Niagara Falls, Boston, MA, Delmarva Peninsula, Chinateeke Island, DC, Mt. Vernon, Monticello, etc. I think we visited 14 states on our way home. It was a fabulous way to see the east coast!
