Help the Allstate Foundation Break the Cycle with the #PurplePurse Challenge!

Disclosure: This post is part of a sponsored campaign with The Allstate Foundation and MomSelect. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It is so important to talk about domestic abuse especially now when it is in the forefront. Many times domestic violence gets swept under the rug. But it is now being talked about and that is a good thing because this violence and abuse must be stopped.

Domestic violence is not only about the physical abuse. It is about financial abuse as well. Many women cannot leave because they do not have the resources to leave. Part of the plan of the abuser is to control the survivor. Taking away the power to have money and a means to leave is just how the abuser operates. It is time to break the silence and break the cycle. 98% of all cases of domestic violence

Luckily, the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse is helping survivors of domestic violence. By raising awareness of the financial abuse that traps women, the Allstate Foundation is making a difference. The Purple Purse program raises money for more than 140 national, state and local domestic violence organizations. Funds raised will support life-changing financial empowerment services to help domestic violence survivors build safer lives for themselves and their families.

The Allstate Foundation is investing more than half a million dollars in the Purple Purse Challenge. The more donations each nonprofit gets, the more it can compete for Allstate Foundation incentive funding. You can help your local non-profit by logging onto PurplePurse.com between Sept. 2 and Oct. 3 and making a donation!

This year, actress Kerry Washington is the Purple Purse ambassador. She has designed a beautiful and limited-edition purple purse to raise awareness. The purse represents a domestic survivor's financial domain. The goal is to get women to be able to be financially independent if she is ever to leave her abuser.

Because I am spreading the word, I received a purple tassel for my purse. The tassel is a symbol for breaking the silence and stopping domestic violence. Each tassel comes with an inspiring story of a survivor. I will wear it proudly on my purse to show my support. I will also be making a donation because it is time to stop this violence.

When Domestic violence affects one in four women in her lifetime, it is time to stop it. It is time to stand up and say no more. Help the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse initiative and make it fashionable to talk about domestic and financial abuse. Make a difference.

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224. Let's break the silence and raise awareness.

MOVIE SUMMARY!
Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is
a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production. The film hits theaters nationwide Oct. 10, 2014.

Old Spice Combos Keep You Covered from Head to Toe! #Combos4Success

Disclaimer: This is part of a sponsored collaboration with Latina Mom Bloggers and Old Spice. All opinions are 100% mine.

For me, Old Spice brings back memories of my father. When we were little every Christmas or birthday, my sister and I would buy him one of those gift packs. We loved the Christmas ones because they would come with an extra added gift. Luckily, my dad loves wearing fragrance because he had a lot of Old Spice. Old Spice will always remind me of my papi!

Recently, Old Spice conducted a poll of 18-35 year old men to inquire about some of their most cherished combinations. Favorite beer accompaniment? Favorite combination of food if you were stranded on a deserted island? Best combo if you want to relive your childhood? Here are the results:

These are great! Who doesn't love Pizza and Beer! I know my hubby does! And hubby would agree about the bacon and eggs on a deserted island. Of course, there would have to be toast and butter as well. We never used a water gun on a trampoline although I am willing to try that one day! I also think that the combo of Old Spice deodorant + body wash + shampoo is a great as well.

The Old Spice antiperspirant and deodorant, body wash + 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner combo results in a manly, amazing, irresistible freshness from head to toe. In the new ad campaign, Old Spice uses a Manroid (half-man, half-robot) to show that Old Spice will leave you so fresh smelling that women will swoon after one whiff. Check out one of the fun videos below.

Make sure to watch the other videos available on the Old Spice You Tube channel! I know I like the smell of Old Spice and so does hubby. The combo of the Old Spice antiperspirant and deodorant, body wash + 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner will leave any man smelling fresh and confident!

Use Old Spice if you want to be covered head to toe!  Click here to get some great coupons for Old Spice products. These coupons will help you get started on the road to freshness!

Into The Woods coming in December!

I have always been a movie girl because I was born and raised in L.A. Hubby is a theatre guy because he is a professional theatre lighting designer. I started loving live theatre when we started dating. I love it when theatre and movies come together because we both get what we want.

I saw "Into the Woods" on stage years ago and I loved it. The music is great, the story is wonderful and now it's a movie!! I cannot wait to see this! I am also glad it was directed by Rob Marshall who also did one of my favorite musicals into movies, Chicago! This is a must see this Christmas!

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Rob Marshall, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directs the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics. Produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, “Wicked” producer Marc Platt and Callum McDougall, “Into the Woods” will be released in theaters Dec. 25, 2014.

Spicy Shelf Review and Giveaway!

Because I love to cook, I have tons of spices. A lot of them are the regular type you buy in the store. Some of them are specialty spices I have collected on my travels. The unfortunate thing is my new kitchen does not have tons of space for my spices. I have had to put some in the pantry. This is inconvenient because I want them right by the stove when I need them.

Luckily, I found a great organizing tool that helps me reclaim some of my spice space and have them handy when I am cooking. The Spicy Shelf is a great new product that gives you a perfect solution to not having enough space in your spice cabinet.

The Spicy Shelf comes with 2 Spicy Shelves, 8 small legs, 4 leg braces and 8 large legs. The different sized legs allow you to size the Spicy Shelf any configuration you would like. This allows you to double or even triple the space depending on your cabinets or pantry.

The Spicy Shelf is wonderful for my kitchen. My spice cabinet was a hot mess. The Spicy Shelf allowed me to take my spices and consolidate them into one area. The Spicy Shelf was super easy to put together. We tried different configurations and because of the size of my kitchen cabinet, I could only do one shelf and then do a secondary one. It worked out fantastically.

I was able to put my large spices on the bigger shelf, then the smaller ones on the smaller Spicy Shelf. The space underneath allowed me to put my awkward shaped spices. I really love the Spicy Shelf. I found spices I had no idea I had!

If you have the same problem I did, you need to look into the Spicy Shelf. It turns that unruly mess of a spice cabinet into an organized space. Head over to the site and check out the video. Use the $5.00 Off Promo Code -- SPICE5. The Spicy Shelf Organizer is $19.95 Plus $7.95 P&H.

If you want to win one, just enter below on the Rafflecopter widget!

Neutrogena Sunscreen Protects You Year-Round!

Summer is almost over but that does not mean that your skin is safe. You need to remember to wear sunscreen all year round. Even when the weather turns cold and gloomy, UVA and UVB rays can still damage your skin.

Neutrogena ambassador, Sandra Echeverría, is sharing the importance of daily sun protection and the dangers of sun exposure. Sandra recommends using a sunscreen containing Helioplex® because it protects the skin from cumulative exposure.

Helioplex® technology to help prevent damaging UVA rays penetrate the skin and provides broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays. This technology not only protects you from sunburn but also protects against the sun's rays that age skin. Several Neutrogena sunscreens containing Helioplex® technology. Some of those products include Beach Defense® Water + Sun Protection Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 + Face and Body Ultra Sheer® Broad Spectrum Sunscreen Stick SPF 70.

I love these products because not only do they protect my skin from sun damage but they are easy to use and great for traveling. The Stick Sunscreen is the best thing when traveling. When we go to Cancun this December, I will be packing a couple of these sticks because I can take them in my carry on with no problem.

And the Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch sunscreen is my hubby's favorite because it is great for his sensitive skin and protects him. I love the mist sunscreen as well. Now that we live on the coast, it is a must have product in our household. I also use sunscreen daily. You can never be too safe when it comes to sun damage. There is no excuse not to be protected from the harmful rays of the sun during the year.

If you would like to win a set of these sunscreen products then enter on the Rafflecopter widget below.

Sears "More to You" Campaign Rewards Your Loved Ones #MasDeLoTuyo #MoreToYou #ad

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Sears and Latina Bloggers Connect.

My parents emigrated to the United States from Costa Rica in the late 50's. Both came at different times and met here. They worked hard. They had jobs that weren't great. They worked in factories and my mom sewed from home as well. Sometimes my mom cleaned houses to make extra money to buy us school clothes. But they made sure that we had a better life than they did. And, we do.

The other day I watched the Sears "More to You" video. The video series is about surprising real people who want to give something more to their loved ones. The people are chosen from real life tweets. The episode I saw featured a teenager called Jasmine who wanted to do something for her dad who worked hard to give her and her siblings a better life as well. It hit home.

I understood why she would want to give her dad a great surprise. I wish I could have done the same for my parents because they always put themselves second to us. They worked hard and, while we never had a lot, we had clothes, food and always a place to live. They made sure we always had the basic necessities of life and, sometimes, even a little bit more. I am so proud of them for what they achieved. Their work ethic and determination made me want to achieve good things in life. I thank my parents for that.

I love that Sears is giving people the opportunity to give their loved ones something special. This campaign gets to the heart of thanking our parents, siblings, friends and family. Sometimes people do so much for you that you want to make sure they get something as well.

Jasmine's dad received a garage full of tools to help him in his work. If you want Sears to give mas de lo tuyo like they did for Jasmine and her dad then Tweet @Sears with #MasDeLoTuyo or #MoreTOYou and Sears just might give more to you.  At Sears, you can always count on getting more – more value, more brands, more rewards and more ways to shop.

LeakFree Starter Kit by Gilmour!

Since we just moved into our new house, we had nothing in terms of yard stuff. Our last house had a huge yard and garden. We hired someone to cut our lawn because it was so big. The new house has a more manageable yard. We need to get a mower and other tools since we left what we had at the last house for our renters.

Luckily, I was offered The LeakFree Starter Kit by Gilmour to help me along. The LeakFree by Gilmour is a watering system is guaranteed to be completely leak-free from faucet to nozzle. The starter kit included everything I needed to get started: a LeakFree adjustable spray nozzle, a 50-foot LeakFree heavy-duty hose and LeakFree faucet-to-hose connector.

This is something we needed because we have no hoses or garden stuff. The 50 ft. hose set up was easy. The hose is sturdy and heavy duty.

Attach the nozzle to the hose.  You push it in and lock it down.

Then attach the connector to your faucet. Push, turn and it locks. That is how easy it is.

The nozzle works well and has various settings. It is great for my tiny garden and containers. It is also great for the back and front yard. I need to buy another one of the front though because we hate having to disconnect it and reconnect it. But it is easy to do so and it does NOT leak.

We were impressed by the ease to set it up and the fact that after a month, the hose is in great condition although it lives outside in the rain and heat. The nozzle does not leak and the connector does not leak. Hubby is loving it and that makes me happy!

The starter kit comes with the hose, connector and nozzle. There are also other accessories you can buy as well like a power jet wand, oscillating sprinkler and pattern nozzle. You can find the LeakFree from Gilmour at Lowes and Home Depot. You can also buy it online at several retailers.

You can follow Gilmour Gardening on Twitter. Like on Facebook.

The Allstate Foundation helps raise awareness for Domestic Violence with the #PurplePurse Challenge! #ad

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Allstate Foundation® and Latina Bloggers Connect.

Considering the news about Ray Rice this week, this is the perfect time to talk about domestic violence. Did you know that domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women? That’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined according to the American Cancer Society.

And domestic violence is not just about physical violence but it is also about financial abuse. In 98% of all cases of domestic violence using finances is a way to control the survivor. It is an insidious way to control because some survivors of abuse cannot get out of that relationship because they do not have the financial means to do so. I had a friend who stayed with her abuser because she had no job or money. He controlled her money and she could not leave. Thank goodness, with a little hlep, she got out of that relationship.

But that is the problem, with no money or credit, the survivor cannot rent an apartment. The survivor can lose her job or children. Domestic violence can shatter lives and destroy families.

Luckily, The Allstate Foundation has responded to this by creating Purple Purse – the Foundation’s national symbol for domestic violence and financial abuse to raise awareness and getting people to openly talk about this important issue. Purple Purse was chosen because a purse represents the center of a woman’s financial domain and purple is the national color of domestic violence awareness.

This year the Allstate Foundation is asking people to join them in the Purple Purse Challenge to raise money for 145 nonprofit organizations that help domestic violence survivors. The Allstate Foundation is investing more than half a million dollars in the Purple Purse Challenge. You can make a difference by donating money. Starting September 2 through October 3, you can visit the Purple Purse website to make your donation. The more donations each Community Partner gets, the more Allstate Foundation funding the organization is eligible to receive.

Actress, Kerry Washington, is the Purple Purse ambassador. She has designed a limited-edition purse that will be distributed to Purple Purse Challenge participants to raise awareness. There will also be 80,000 purse tassels available to also raise awareness.

Since 2005, The Allstate Foundation has invested more than $40 million across the country to help domestic violence survivors regain control of their finances and break free from abuse. The Allstate Foundation wants to break the cycle of domestic abuse by making it fashionable to talk about it. We should all help. The only way to stop the violence is to talk about it. We also need to help the organizations that empower the survivors of domestic abuse. Your donation will make this happen.

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224. Let's break the silence and raise awareness.

Let ZYRTEC® Get Rid of your AllergyFace! #ENFRENTATUSALERGIAS #ad

I wrote this post as part of my participation in a blog tour for Latina Mom Bloggers on behalf of ZYRTEC® ALLERGY FACE® and received compensation to thank me for taking the time to participate. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

I never had allergies until I moved to North Carolina 7 years ago. When we moved here, I started getting allergies the first year. I had no idea what was happening but then my doctor verified it. My allergies get worse in the Spring but sometimes they are all year-round. Winter is the best time but sometimes, I still get symptoms.

I hate them. I always say I get ALLERGY FACE®. My eyes get puffy. My skin gets pale and drawn. I get a runny nose and that means a red nose. The watery eyes are the worse thing though. Let's be honest, I look a hot mess. I really have to work a little harder to look my best during this time. Fall is tough enough with the colder weather making my skin dry and sensitive. That allergies make it worse and I have to do something!

Luckily, ZYRTEC® has partnered with celebrate makeup artist Jackie Gomez to give Latinas some great beauty tips to help combat ALLERGY FACE® during the Fall allergy season. Allergies not only affect the way you feel but how you look. Jackie's beauty tips can give me a fresh-faced and flawless look during this time.

Jackie's looks help allergy sufferers like me, disguise the tell-tale signs of ALLERGY FACE®. She has created six celebrity-inspired looks that will help Latinas look better during allergy season. Jackie's six looks are great. I looked at them all and you can check them out here. I decided to try the Bronze Beauty.

I loved the way adding a little bronzer could make me look better. Jackie suggested contouring around the cheeks to create an illusion of a leaner face. By adding bronzer underneath the chin and on the cheekbones, a puffy face will look thinner. To make your puffy eyes look less puffy, use blue eyeliner instead of black or brown. What I noticed was the bronzer helped me look like I had a little color and lessened the puffy eyes and face. I will have to buy some blue eyeliner to help my eyes look less puffy as well. I loved these tips and I hope to try more out when I get ALLERGY FACE®.

I also love using ZYRTEC® for my allergies. ZYRTEC® helps relieve the allergy symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes and itchy nose or throat. These symptoms can be caused by allergy triggers such as dust, mold, pet dander, tree pollen, weeds and grasses. The Dissolve Tabs are fantastic because you pop them into your mouth and they dissolve without water. Thus, you can take them at anytime and anywhere. ZYRTEC® provides 24-hour relief.

The makers of ZYRTEC® know that allergies can affect not only the way you feel, but also how you look. To help you Face Your Allergies this fall, Zyrtec is giving you 20 bonus ZYRTEC® Rewards points!* All you have to do is sign in or register, then click on the Earn Points tab to enter the Secret Word ALLERGYFACE. You can get a free $2-off coupon for ZYRTEC®, just for signing up. Once you have earned 500 points, you have the option to redeem them for a Neutrogena® mascara to help disguise ALLERGY FACE® beauty challenges. Enjoy!

*Points vary depending on count size and frequency of purchase as well as completion of non-purchase activities. See Terms and Conditions Restrictions apply. Offer expires 10/18/14.

Never Forget - 9/11

I was lucky I was able to go see the 9-11 Memorial site last year. It was a very sad and moving experience. Here are some of my pictures.
