Disclosure: I attended the #VeryBadDayEvent #Disneyinhomeevent #starwarsrebels #maleficent #sleepingbeauty #halloweentime and #fireandrescue events and my expenses: flight, accommodations, transportation and some meals were be covered by Disney. All opinions, however, are always 100% mine.

Alexander is having a bad day the day before his birthday. As the day progresses, it gets worse and worse. His family, however, is having a great day. Mom is up for a promotion. Dad has an interview for a great job at a gaming company. His sister, Emily, is playing Peter Pan in the school play. His brother, Anthony, might be named Duke of the prom and has a gorgeous girlfriend!

Then Alexander makes a wish. A wish that will completely change the Cooper Family's day forever.

That's the premise of this really funny and cute Disney movie. Based on the book of the same name, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, takes us on a roller coaster ride of fun and family hi jinks. After Alexander makes his wish, the family has a bad day. The car breaks down. Emily comes down with a cold. Anthony has a zit. Dad has to take the baby to his interview. And, mom's new project turns into a disaster. There are more disasters along the way that make this family's day a terrible, horrible, no good and a very bad day!

All this takes place on Alexander's birthday. I don't want to give too much away but let's just say that every disaster that occurs will leave you laughing out loud. It will also make you realize that even when you are having a bad day, it helps to have family around to make it better.

I really liked this film. I had no idea what to expect but it really held my interest and made me laugh more than a few times. Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner are perfect as the parents. Steve Carell is always funny but here he also shows a very sweet and fatherly side. His scene in the Japanese restaurant is brilliant. Jennifer Garner is the ultimate mom. Loving and kind, yet she holds her own in the comedic scenes. Her encounter with Dick Van Dyke, who I worship, was one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

The younger actors, Dylan Minnette as Anthony, Kerris Dorsey as Emily and  Ed Oxenbould as Alexander hold their own against the veteran actors. Kerris has a hilarious scene after she drinks a little too much cough syrup and has to perform. Dylan also has a wonderfully funny scene with one of my favorite actresses, Jennifer Coolidge, as his driving instructor. And Ed Oxenbould is perfect as Alexander. He is funny, sweet and also captures the awkwardness of childhood. But Elise and Zoey Vargas playing baby Trevor steal every scene they are in! The interview scene had me rolling in the aisle. That is all I will say!

I have to mention that Bella Thorne as Anthony's beautiful girlfriend does a great job in making her character Celia likable although she really isn't. And Megan Mullally as Kelly Cooper's boss is fantastic.

This is the type of movie I love because it surprised me. I would have marked it off as a kid's movie and waited for it to come to DVD because I love Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner. But it is not just a movie for kids. It is a great movie for adults as well. There are also some surprises in the movie that I loved but will not spoil it for you. And the theme of Alexander loving all things to do with Australia brings some very funny scenes that you will love.

Would I recommend this movie? Yes. The movie is perfect for kids even smaller kids. The movie reminds us that even when you have a bad day, it's not always that bad and that things will get better. I loved that message. It is a fun and heartwarming movie with a wonderful message.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day opens today nationwide. If you are looking for good family fun, this is a movie to watch!!

  1. I really like the sound of this movie and I like Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner. I want to see how this family works together in helping one another on their very bad day!

  2. I also like Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner. It is fairly rare that a movie can be enjoyed equally by both adults and children. Thanks for the review.
